Co-op Commitment
As a nonprofit cooperative nursery school, Summerville is able to provide a low cost, quality education for children 2-5 years of age. Our nursery school needs the “cooperative” active participation of all families in order to operate successfully and at its highest potential. Parents, or designated assistants, act as aides in the classroom on a regular basis. They serve on committees which fulfill various needs at the school and/or serve on the Board of Directors.
Having families so closely involved in the classroom helps the children feel at home in a group setting and to grow emotionally, cognitively, socially and physically under trained supervision. They learn to interact with adults other than their own parents through associations with the teacher and other assistants in the classroom.
Summerville’s Co-op commitment allows parents and other assistants the opportunity to observe their children at play and learning with other children and adults, allowing for a greater perspective of their own child’s experiences at school. Parents and families are able to receive a unique perspective on the early educational years of their child’s lives by playing an active role in their classroom.
